The EHF European Cup Men 2024/25 semi-finals began fiercely last weekend, with AEK Athens HC and HC Alkaloid claiming key victories. This week, two teams will exit the competition, while the other two will advance closer to the trophy, with the finals scheduled for May.
By the end of the weekend, the two finalists of the EHF European Cup Men 2024/25 will be determined. The second legs of the semi-finals will see HC Izvidac host AEK Athens HC in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday at 20:00 CEST, while Runar Sandefjord takes on HC Alkaloid in Norway on Sunday at 17:00 CEST.
Three of the four semi-finalists enjoyed a full week’s rest after last weekend’s first legs, while HC Alkaloid had to quickly shift focus to domestic action—securing a hard-fought 33:30 win over RK Butel just two days later.
The Macedonian side carries a five-goal cushion (42:37) into their second leg against Runar Sandefjord, who have proven their comeback ability before—overturning a six-goal first-leg deficit against Olympiacos with a stunning 10-goal home victory in the return fixture.
Meanwhile, AEK Athens HC takes a commanding nine-goal lead to Bosnia and Herzegovina, though HC Izvidac shouldn’t be counted out—they’ve advanced from all three previous rounds despite never winning a first leg. Their largest first-leg deficit overcome was three goals (against Haukar in the quarter-finals).
Izvidac’s sharpshooter Diano Neris Cesko—the tournament’s top scorer with 75 goals (avg. 8 per match)—had an uncharacteristically quiet night against AEK, netting just four goals from 11 attempts, his lowest tally this season.
Return to the final for the Greek powerhouse?
AEK Athens HC take a commanding nine-goal lead into their EHF European Cup semi-final second leg, aiming to return to the final—and repeat their 2021 triumph. Motivated by rivals Olympiacos’ finals run last season, AEK are determined to go all the way.
The Greek giants are already chasing a historic treble: ✔ Domestic Cup – Won decisively weeks ago ✔ League Title – Secured 1st place, earning home-court advantage in playoffs (potentially vs. Olympiacos) 🔜 EHF European Cup – A win this weekend edges them closer to the final
With one trophy secured, can AEK take the next step toward a remarkable triple crown?
