Amorim defends struggling Onana: 'As manager, I've committed more errors this campaign than our goalkeeper
Andre Onana’s two costly errors in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon came just 24 hours after Nemanja Matic branded him ‘among United’s worst-ever goalkeepers.’ The Cameroonian has now committed eight error-induced goals since last season – the highest tally among Premier League keepers. However, manager Ruben Amorim defended his player: ‘Statistically, I’ve made more mistakes than him in recent months.’
“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”
Manchester United will welcome Lyon to Old Trafford for the second leg of their tie next Thursday at 20:00 BST.
Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, United’s most likely route to securing European football next season is by winning the Europa League, which offers a Champions League qualification spot.
When questioned about his confidence in his goalkeeper, Amorim told TNT Sports: “Our approach remains the same — we keep training, analyzing matches, and selecting the best lineup to win each game.”
