Luka Modric shared his ideal retirement plan as he gets ready to negotiate a new contract with Real Madrid at the age of 39.
The 39-year-old midfield maestro has already cemented his place in Real Madrid’s history, becoming the club’s oldest goalscorer and most-capped player this season. However, instead of winding down, Modric remains driven for more success and aims to continue playing through the 2025/26 campaign.
Modric has a clear long-term goal—leading Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite ongoing speculation about his future, reports indicate he is willing to extend his stay at Real Madrid for another year, even if it requires taking another pay cut. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Modric’s representatives and the club will begin soon, as remaining in Madrid remains his top priority. While clubs from the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer (MLS) have shown strong interest, Modric is expected to reject overseas offers. He is keen to stay in Europe, prioritizing competitive football over financial gain to ensure peak fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“Right now, I’m not thinking about retirement. But as I’ve always said – I would like to retire at Real Madrid, that would be a dream for me. We’ll see what happens,” he said in an interview with French outlet Telefoot
“There’s still a lot of the season left, and I want to focus on what’s left, because there are a lot of games still to play. I’m in no rush to make a decision.”
Before resuming club duties, Modric will once again lead Croatia as captain in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final second leg against France. With a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Croatia is in a strong position, and Modric’s experience will be vital in steering his team toward the next round.
