Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday (April 21) in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio had been chosen as the head of the Catholic Church in March 2013 following Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation. His death was confirmed by His Eminence, Cardinal Farrell.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” he said.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised.”
Farrell added: “With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Following the death of Pope Francis, Monday’s four Serie A matches—Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus—were postponed. Originally set for Easter Monday, a national holiday in Italy, the games have been rescheduled for Wednesday. Lionel Messi, who met the Pope—a lifelong San Lorenzo fan—paid tribute on social media, sharing a photo with the caption: ‘A different Pope, close, Argentinean…’ He added, ‘RIP Pope Francis. Thank you for making the world a better place. We will miss you.'”
